“DREAM BIG, MAKE HAWAII A BETTER PLACE” - A POSTER, ESSAY & VIDEO CONTEST
Honolulu, Hawaii, September 21, 2011 - For the second year in a row, students from Kindergarten through 12th grade will have a chance to “dream big and make Hawaii a better place” through the Clarence T. C. Ching Foundation 2011 “Inspired in Hawaii” Essay, Poster and Video Contest.More than $10,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded in each of the three divisions: Poster, Essay and Video. Each entry must identify an existing problem in Hawaii and provide a thoughtful solution to the problem.Students must also include a supporting statement, which demonstrates a clear connection between their project and the life of Clarence T. C. Ching.
“The Office for Social Ministry is particularly excited to be a part of the contest as a supporting sponsor this year,” says resource developer, Fr. Robert Stark. “Hawaii’s youth have their own way of seeing social justice issues and can provide a fresh outlook for creating innovative solutions.” Carol Ignacio, Executive Director of the Office for Social Ministry, adds “As we continue our efforts to address homelessness as part of the Diocese RoadMap Witness to Jesus, we are hopeful young people will submit entries addressing this vital issue—and share their perspective on ways we can all make positive change together in Hawaii.”
The Office for Social Ministry is collaborating with several Diocesan departments such as Hawaii Catholic schools, the Office on Religious Education, and the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry to actively promote the contest in all Catholic vicariates, parishes, schools, youth ministry groups and social networks in the Diocese of Honolulu. Last year’s winners included students from Saint Francis School and Sacred Hearts Academy.
